How the thumb
technique works

Where does the technology come from?

In addition to the so-called "Mediterranean" technique, which is widely used in Germany, in which the bowstring is stretched with the index / middle / ring finger, there is also the method of stretching the bow with the thumb, which is still used in Asia today. This technique was mainly used by the numerous ancient equestrian peoples such as Mongols, Tartars and Huns. But also with Turks and Hungarians the thumb extract was and is widespread and still common today.

What are the advantages of the thumbring technique?

  • Less pressure on the fingers from the bowstring between the fingers. This brings relief especially with short bows with a long extension of the bowstring angle and with the Mediterranean technique.

  • Allows quick reloading with a lower risk of injury. The arrow does not have to be pushed through between the string and the bow arm - so the arrowhead neither sticks into the hand nor into the bow, as happens again and again with the Mediterranean technique.

  • More extension length with the same effort - about 1-2 inches more compared to the Mediterranean technique.

  • A variety of arrows possible. The “Spine”-value of the arrow does not have to be perfectly adapted to the bow when using the thumb technique. A great advantage of the archers in the ancient battle, as they could simply collect the arrows that had been fired from the ground and fire them again.

  • More stable fixation of the arrow by placing and holding it differently. This makes apply and shooting easier.

  • It's just fun - the most important reason why people shoot with thumb technique and ring.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with shooting on foot with the thumb technique in the absence of a horse. In the meantime, numerous followers have already found themselves in this country who practice this type of shooting - or, more correctly, of loosening. Nevertheless, you still get astonished looks when you appear with a short reflex arc for archery.
